A fun indoor/outdoor activity for toddlers and kids is to make bird feeders out of pinecones. We worked outside so I let him get a little messy so my toddler had a BLAST making these. **This page contains affiliate links and I may earn a commission if you use them. HOW YOU DO IT: 1. SETUP: Start by scooping out your peanut butter (or other) onto one of the plates. This helps if you still plan on using some of the peanut butter in your jar and don't want to sacrifice the whole thing. We were near the end, so I didn't mind scooping with a dirty pinecone knife. Also, pour 1-2 cups of birdseed on the second plate. 2. Using your knife or finger, smear some peanut butter so it covers the pinecone. The more peanut butter, the more birdseed will stick, so feel free to slather it on. **With my 2 year old, we found it easier if I put on the peanut butter and he helped with the next step. 3. Roll your pb-covered pinecone in the birdseed so it gets covered with all the good stuff. Make sure you have the birdseed at least 1/4 inch deep so it can get into all the nooks and crannies of the pinecone. **BONUS: You can have your toddler sprinkle it over the pinecone which helps with fine motor skills! 4. Tie a ribbon around the top or bottom of your pinecone so it can hang in the trees. My ribbons were about 24 inches long per pinecone. I give mine a gentle shake after I tie it around the pinecone to make sure it's not going to fall down during a little breeze. Find a nice branch where your little ones can peek out to see the birds come to nibble. Make sure the pinecone part is up near a branch that the birds can sit on for their snack.
